“Light” lake is a symbol of Sayan. It’s often called
“Big” as its calm hyaline lies 1.5-2km north and south and 1km east
and west. It’s about 1200m high above the level of the sea. It’s
margined with dense cedar-deal forest that mounts the nearest chute
hills. Two Ergaki peaks: Bird and Starry rises above the lake and
taiga for one kilometre. Between them lies the large cirque covered
with white mist. Forest, mountains, peaks and cirque - everything
is mirrored in calm waters of the lake.
Bear Lake is a quiet beatific nook. Its warm waters draw on to their
clarity. Old-timers say that once this lake was a favourite place
of taiga master: a bear, so in his honour it was given this name.
Really, the numerous snags resemble set bear figures not only in
daytime but also in nights.
Marble lake got his name for its pure glacier water. It’s 1598m
high above the level of the sea. There is a waterfall 100-120m far
from the lake. Cascading from 30-40m height, it forms two or three
steps with steep streams between them. Underlying bed consists of
mass craggy granite bars: big parallelepipeds which look like giant
red steps due to a great many microorganisms on them. The waterfall
is in the flower of its beauty in spring, in period of intensive
thawing of snow.
Not far from the waterfall (in 100-120m), there is a source of the
mountain river Jerboa (“Tushkanchic”). It springs from a cirque
joining one of the main peaks (2200m high). In the middle of summer
the water heats up to 16-18°C and one may swim in it.
In the ravine from the Younger brother side, there is emerald mountain
lake. It has a shape of a rectangle (nearly a square) with rounded
off corners and its origin is wrapped in mystery. It’s called “Lake
of mountain spirits”. One of its best sights is a waterfall, which
cascades from 20m height as an all-over roaring stream.
